Pledging support - reducing water waste in Burnley
Initial work in summer 2011 with the Muslim community in Burnley, supported by United Utilities, to learn about how Muslim's use water wisely and efficiently and to link this knowledge with United Utilities messages on water use reduction, has been enhanced by the completion of a second stage project.
More than twenty local people including Mosque Committee members, Imam Abdul Basit and a women's group have been working with Samia over winter 2011/12 to deliver a second phase of reducing water waste by learning, sharing and raising awareness. Ghousia Mosque Imam, Abdul Basit, created and delivered a khutba (special sermon) at Friday prayers on reducing water waste which inspired and encouraged over 100 men to pledge to take actions ranging from repairing dripping taps to taking shorter showers. The women's group undertook training with Samia before delivering the water use reduction message at women only events across Burnley encouraging almost 200 women to pledge their support to take water saving actions too.
Flood Risk Awareness in Bolton
With the support of the Environment Agency's Flood Risk Team and Diversity Action Group, Samia has been working in the B1 area of Bolton, an area that is at risk of flooding because of avoidable blockages to culverts on the river Irwell.
The local community is vibrant and encompasses people of diverse heritage including Somalian, Indian, Eastern European and many others all of whom have been keen to find out about how they can reduce the risk of their homes flooding. Working closely with faith communities including the local Hindu temple, churches and mosques, Bolton Interfaith Council, Council of Mosques, Bolton Volunteer Forum, Bolton CVS and Bolton Council Samia has raised awareness of reducing flood risks.
