Faiths4Change has been working in partnership with La Salle Hotel School based in Croxteth, Liverpool to develop a functional kitchen garden with 3 polytunnels, 25 raised beds, 4 no-dig growing areas, a new soft fruit caged area and 12 espalier fruit trees. Here, we delivered a range of sessions for schools teaching each age group about growing vegetables and fruit plants, harvesting for healthy meals, trying out raw foods and reducing food waste.
Through these sessions we challenged students in Y6 and Y10 from local schools to think about where their food comes from, the carbon impact of various production and import processes, how growing food sustainably can support a huge reduction in personal carbon impact and generation of non-recyclable waste. We provided each participant with a growing kit, helping them to plant seeds to take home and giving them responsibility for caring for their new food-producing plant.
Each group also visited Myerscough College in Croxteth Park exploring some of the glass houses where national collections of plants are grown and the extraordinary walled garden with its heritage fruit trees and vegetable and fruit growing areas, to give an insight into the wealth of amazing natural fruits and vegetables that can be grown locally.
