St. Michael's Catholic Primary School, Kensington

Faiths4Change has been working with St Michael’s Catholic Primary School to run a gardening club at the school for 6 years.  The Busy Bees gardening club is run weekly working with small groups of children from different year groups.

The gardening club works to connect the children and their Catholic teaching with nature & the world around them. It hopes to inspire awe, wonder, and discovery of the natural world, providing the students with a better understanding of the importance of plants to the world, and aims to enable the children to understand that the food bought in shops has been grown & produced from the ground. To help achieve this understanding, the club aims to teach the students on the needs of plants, photosynthesis, and the structure of soils and how plants grow.

Growing in 2020

This term in the garden we have been preparing the raised beds on the field to create a more natural wildlife friendly space. We've started planting herbs like sage which has a long history of use in our food and health treatments. Soon we will plant lavender and chamomile.

In the small vegetable garden we have started planting herbs, broad beans, onions and cabbages. Lessons have explored the parts of the plant, planting techniques, preparing the ground and looking for mini beasts.  It's been joy to work with these budding gardeners.
