The Roots in the City Tea Garden was a three month project that ran from 1st March to 31st May 2022. The aim of the project was to develop the 'quiet area' of the garden to make a space where the community can sit together and socialise and to plant up containers with herbs and flowers that can be used to brew teas.
We worked with regular users of the garden to plan the area in a design workshop and used the weekly group sessions to tidy the area and sow seeds. We also held six woodworking workshops where community members learned to build benches and planters from reclaimed scaffolding boards and wooden pallets.
The project concluded with a joint tea party and Platinum Jubilee celebration with the church where we served freshly brewed mint tea along with cakes kindly donated by The Quarter.
The project benefited local residents in an area of Liverpool city centre with very little green space while also providing an outdoor seated space for activities, gatherings and an example of resident led green space improvement for other organisations embarking on community garden development.
